Perfect Low Carb Appetizer
I love to entertain. I love to get my friends together, make a whole bunch of food and then just hang out, eat and enjoy each others company. Of course, when I make food for any kind of get together, it all has to be low carb. I’m not breaking my diet just because I have a party! However, most of my friends are not strict keto followers like me and they just want to eat any food that tastes good. I am up to that challenge! I can easily make keto food that is so delicious, no one would ever know that it is low carb. Challenge accepted!
This recipe for keto sausage balls is one of my go-to low carb dishes to prepare for any get together. I have made them hundreds of times and no one has ever suspected them of being low carb. They are just too tasty to ever be considered a “diet food”! So what is in these amazing sausage balls? Let’s take a look.

Of course there has to be sausage! I like to make this recipe using breakfast sausage which I think has a great, unique taste. You can really use any kind of sausage you’d like from spicy chorizo to sweet Italian sausage. You can even find types of turkey sausage that would be delicious. No matter what you choose, cook it, crumble it and you are ready to go!
Now to add some flavor to the balls. Salt is always necessary and it not only adds its own irresistible flavor but it also enhances the taste of the sausage. Salt is pretty powerful stuff! I use garlic powder as well to make these balls to add a pungent and powerful taste. You can skip the garlic powder if it’s not your thing but I highly recommend it especially if you are serving these low carb sausage balls as a dinner or late afternoon snack- garlic automatically puts a food into the “dinner” category.
To make the sausage balls have a creamy, and rich taste, we add sour cream, butter and cream cheese. Keto dieting means that extra fats are okay! And mixing in these three, high-fat ingredients make the sausage balls a decadent treat.
Now, to hold everything together you need to have some kind of binder. This is an ingredient that will make the mix keep its shape and actually be “balls”. We use almond flour, coconut flour and also xanthan gum to act as our binder. Coconut flour and almond flour add some nice nutty flavors while also sealing the mix together. The xanthan gum will prevent the balls from falling flat as they bake and is an ingredient you will need for lots of keto recipes. Buy a big container of it to have on hand!
Once your mix is made, you are ready to scoop and shape the cocktail sized sausage balls! A quick trip to the oven and you are ready to stick each ball with a toothpick and serve! While you can opt to make them a little bigger, they are best when made small and bite-sized. Who doesn’t love a perfect little meatball?!
Give this recipe a try for your next house party or just to enjoy yourself as you buzz around your house on a Friday night. As always, let us know how much you love these by leaving a comment below! Enjoy!
