On March 7th, 2018, The Polsky Center hosted the finals of its sixth College New Venture Challenge. The College New Venture Challenge is an annual event that encourages college students to come up with new and innovative ideas for startups that can help the world. This year’s grand prize winner was “Quevos,” a startup promising to produce a high-protein and low-carb alternative to potato chips from egg whites. Judges agreed that the chips would be a smash hit with athletes, fitness fanatics, and ketogenic dieters. Founders Nick Hamburger, Chonghyun Ahn, Ben Elias, David West, and Zack Schreier all took home a $15,000 prize to help further improve Quevos and bring this brainy idea closer to the market.
The Halo Top model
The founders of Quevos started their company with a simple but novel concept when it comes to health foods: if you want customers to enjoy a substitute product, you need to make it taste as close as possible to the original. The inspiration behind Quevos came from Halo Top, a California-based ice cream company. Halo Top was founded in 2012 and immediately set out to create a low-calorie alternative to America’s favorite warm-weather treat. Boasting a massive range of flavors and a fraction of the calories of competing brands, the ice cream maker has quickly found its way into stores across the country thanks to its shockingly rich flavor.
The better potato chip
Quevos aims to become the Halo Top of potato chips. Created from egg whites instead of potatoes, Quevos chips are crunchy, satisfying, and mimics the texture and flavor of the carb-loaded salty snack. However, the new egg chips come with significantly improved nutrition numbers. Quevos chips have a whopping 20 grams of protein for every two grams of carbohydrates. These statistics have led the team of college students to hypothesize that the target market for their new snacks would be fitness enthusiasts as well as ketogenic dieters looking for a quick snack to curb their carb cravings.
Improvements to be made…and a bright future
The judges at the College New Venture Challenge were overwhelmingly impressed with Quevos and offered a host of compliments and suggestions to get the product into the market even sooner.
“This is absolutely going to sell like crazy in the athletic market,” one enthusiastic judge commented. “How much product development do you need to do to get it to cross into the mainstream?”
Other judges recommended that the college students switch up the packaging to better reflect Quevos’ all-natural recipe. Another judge advised the young entrepreneurs to try and move away from the potato chip comparison, instead referring to them as “thins” to further drive home the product’s highly nutritious macros.
Will you be seeing Quevos on shelves near you? While it’s impossible to say for sure, these college students have gotten $15,000 closer to putting their new nutritious snacks inside your shopping cart!
