Liquid Benefits through Butter Coffee!
Butter coffee is an amazing way to start off your keto day. Not only does it energize you, but it also stimulates your metabolism, boosts focus and improves brain function. It also tastes amazingly rich, creamy and decadent- exactly what you need in the morning!
As an advocate of the ketogenic lifestyle, one of his most popular methods for a supercharged, productive and healthy day is starting each morning with a cup of butter coffee. This is simply coffee with butter and coconut oil (truly keto coffee ingredients). You probably have all 3 ingredients in your kitchen now! When stocking your pantry to make keto butter coffee, be sure to use high-quality ingredients like grass-fed butter and organic, unfiltered coconut oil to get the most health benefits possible.
Some people don’t like the bitter taste of coffee and end up settling for a cup loaded with artificial flavors and sugars to mask the taste. However, you do not need to pour sugar into coffee just to make it taste great. Butter coffee is a good alternative to the artificial cup of junk, with the added benefit of being incredibly healthy. It’s creamy and even somewhat sweet even without any added sweetener.

MCT oil1 attributes to much of the drink’s benefits. Coconuts, and their healthy saturated fat-filled meat, are very high in MCT’s (medium chain triglycerides) which are easily digested by the body and uniquely metabolized. They are taken directly to the liver to provide long-lasting energy (much better than energy derived from carbohydrates). MCT oil provides benefits such as improved blood sugar regulation2, improved metabolism3, improved appetite regulation4, and are used to treat many diseases. You can think of MCT oil as a concentrated form of coconut oil.
Enjoying a cup of butter coffee in the mornings or afternoon gives you a boost of fat and keeps you feeling full for a long time.
Each ingredient serves an important function in making good butter coffee. That includes the Nutribullet! The key to making this coffee is high-speed blending – stirring will not give you the same results. You need to disperse the oil evenly throughout the drink or you might end up with a pool of coconut oil and butter floating at the top!
Some optional add-ins include a splash of cream, cinnamon, cocoa powder or a sugar-free syrup (but we’re keeping it natural and simple!).

- Make a cup of coffee your favorite way. We like to use a Turkish Coffee Pot. We simply simmer ground coffee in water for about 5 minutes and then strain it into our cup. You can also use a Moka Pot, a French press, or a coffee machine!
- Pour your brewed coffee into your blender (like a Nutribullet) and butter and coconut oil. Blend for about 10 seconds. You'll see it instantly become light and creamy!
- Pour the butter coffee into a mug and enjoy! Add in any other ingredients you’d like in this step like cinnamon or whipped cream!

Can you drink in evening as well ?
If you don’t mind the caffeine, sure!
I absolutely loved this coffee flavor! I was a 2-cup per day drinker with plenty of flavored creamer (non-measured). I refined my diet first to knock out mostly processed foods, but told myself my regular creamer would ALWAYS be in my life (2 tbl per cup). Then I refined my diet more, eliminating creamer (ie, sugar) and ultimately the coffee too (because I don’t enjoy it without that extra flavor). This is the perfect balance between my 2 worlds!
I’m currently getting back into a more active role with running (was a favorite pastime of mine before I gained a lot of weight) and need to up my fuel game a bit. Thinking that this combined with my all-natural breakfast smoothies will be the perfect start to an energized day! So glad I stumbled across this coffee wonderosity! 😉
Is the butter salted or unsalted? Does it make a difference?
We’ve made this with both kinds of butter and couldn’t tell the difference but most people prefer to use unsalted butter.
I am new to Keto. What is macrobs? How do I count them?
Learn all about macros here!
Does it separate if you don’t drink it right away. I get busy and my coffee can sit around for hours in a travel mug.
We’ve never experienced separation. Make sure you emulsify it well, it should stay for a good while.
I travel for work, can I use a shaker bottle?
Hmm, in theory it should work! Let us know how well it works 🙂
Is it ok to add a spoon of cream and a splash sugar free syrup
Yes! That sounds lovely!
Does the coffee replace breakfast? Or can I have bacon, eggs & BP coffee?
As long as it fits your macros, you can eat whatever keto meals you like 🙂
If I drink more than 1 cup of coffee in the morning do I do this for every cup?
Butter coffee is quite calorie dense, so I’d stick to one, maybe two cups a day, if your macros allow for it.
Just tried my 1st cup.. loving it. I added some stevia, used some chocolate coffee from starbucks..YUM thank you
Could I use instant coffee for this recipe?
If that’s what you prefer, that would work well too!
Can this work with decaf coffee as well
Absolutely!
Can I use my own cold brew coffee if I heat it – or does this work significantly better with fresh, hot brewed coffee? I’ve been using cold brew because it seems to be easier on my stomach (less acidic)
I’m not sure the oils would melt and emulsify in cold coffee, but you’re welcome to try!
Can coconut butter be used in place of regular butter. If so do you still add coconut oil?
I’m not sure the consistency would be right. I’d stick to the recipe for the best results 🙂
great info. thanks for sharing.
Do you have to use Coconut oil. I don’t like the after taste it leaves.
Nope, you can omit it entirely.
I use pure MCT oil, as don’t like my coffee to taste like coconut. It’s more beneficial and already in liquid form anyway. Also use unsalted butter ??
what sort of coffee can we use? is the normal coffee like jar coffee ( nescafe and the like ) is ok to use?
Any coffee you like 🙂
