Rich & Creamy Hot Cocoa!
Winter has officially HIT New York City.
Last night, the temperature dropped down to 16°F and it wasn’t much kinder today. Thankfully we were nice and toasty in our apartment with the heat blasting and all of the windows bolted shut. Nevertheless, cold weather brings a kind of romance with it. We were inspired by the frigid day today and decided to make a creamy, low carb hot chocolate to sip on while we watched Lost on Netflix. The cold weather isn’t so bad when you can make delicious treats and zone out to TV marathons all day!
To make this delicious, creamy low carb hot chocolate, it took just about 10 minutes and we had fun taking photos of it. Perhaps we’re a bit late with the Christmas decorations but they added a nice winter-y touch to our photos. And hot cocoa at Christmas time just makes sense! And those pretty little ceramic mugs make this hot cocoa even more enjoyable. It’s almost as if we were sitting in a quaint NYC coffee shop rather than huddled up in our apartment on a frigid day.

Of course, our creamy keto hot chocolate is totally low carb- we wouldn’t’ have it any other way! However, you would never know that the typical cocoa carbs are missing. Our low carb version is just as sweet, chocolatey and delicious as any hot cocoa out there! Each serving has only 2 net carbs while still being super rich and creamy. We used erythritol to sweeten our keto cocoa paired with unsweetened cocoa powder. The touch of cinnamon and pinch of salt also brings out the delicious flavors of the chocolate- don’t skip them for the full effect! If you have some vanilla extract, add a splash of that as well for an even more gourmet taste.
If you make this yummy low carb hot chocolate recipe, let us know – send us a pic or tag us on any of our social media pages! We would love to feature your photos on the blog. It is quite the photogenic drink! Just remember to take the picture before you take a sip- I drank half of my keto cocoa before remembering that I needed to snap a pic- I couldn’t resist!
If you’d like to make this drink dairy-free, you can substitute the heavy cream with coconut cream. We made both versions and they ended up equally delicious. We always have a few cans of coconut cream on our shelves so it is a good option when we run out of heavy cream. The subtle coconut taste is also great when combined with rich chocolate. No matter which option you choose, this keto cocoa is going to be a total hit! A perfect way to warm up a chilly day. Enjoy!
Servings: servings |
- 2 cups almond milk (or any nut milk)
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 3 tbsp So Nourished Erythritol
- 3 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1 pinch salt (optional, but brings out sweetness)
- Set a small pot onto a low flame with your almond (or any nut) milk and heavy cream. To make this dairy free - use some coconut cream!
- While it's heating up, place the rest of your ingredients into a Nutribullet or small blender.
- When your milk mixture is bubbling slightly, take it off the flame and pour the contents into your blender.
- Blend for about a minute to get it nice and frothy.
- Serve with some shaved chocolate and enjoy!

Omg! I made the hot cocoa and I believe it is the best hot cocoa ever. A bomb! I used a different sweetener and one tbsp would have been just fine. Awesome!
Great to hear!
So I had been out in the icy rain all day and wanted a hot drink. I made this just now using unsweetened plain almond milk and a bit of whipping cream as well as truvia classic, and really good quality organic baking cocoa. I also added some Himalayan pink salt. I tried it, and it was really good… then I got an idea, and added a tbsp of my XTC brain octane oil as I’m low on my fat macros due to being stuck outside running around all day. I whipped it up with my little milk frother and bam! Can I just say, this is the richest and most satisfying drink? I think I found a new nighttime treat!
O my goodness this tasted better then a Starbucks hot cocoa.. not as sweet as swiss miss milk chocolate but that may be cause all I had as a sweetener right now was trivia baking blend which has to of thrown my macros off but who cares a cup of this was worth every sip can’t wait for my monk fruit sweetener to come in it should be even better .. deffinatly going to have a cup on Sundays when my sweet tooth kicks in. Thank you for the recipe
That’s high praise! Thanks so much for the kind words!
My husband begged for it again the next night
Just made this with So Delicious unsweetened vanilla coconut milk and it’s amazing!! No hint of coconut like you get with the canned milk & cream. My non-keto hot cocoa connoisseur teenager said it was awesome and she was hesitant because she detests coconut. I topped mine with whipped cream that I made in a cup with an immersion blender and some vanilla stevia drops. Really delicious! Next time I may add some peppermint extract to the cocoa or the whipped cream (in place of cinnamon) as I love peppermint hot cocoa.
Sounds great! Ice cream sounds like just the thing that would go well with this hot cocoa 🙂
This was really good. I woke up this morning knowing I was going to look for a low carb almond milk hot chocolate recipe to go with the fresh cinnamon rolls I made yesterday. I made this one with the creamed coconut because I did not have heavy cream in the house. I substituted 1tbs with dark cocoa powder as I wanted it a bit on the dark side. I was not disappointed. I definitely make it many more times.
Amazing! I’ve tried numerous keto hot chocolate recipes, and this one tops them all!
I’m so glad, Gail!
Just made this and it is ABSOLUTELY delicious!! The only thing I modified was adding a dash of sea salt…it heightens the flavors of cinnamon and cocoa. But I honestly cannot taste the difference of this to traditional sugar laden hot chocolate!! Bravo and thanks for all of your recipes!!
Sounds great! Salt definitely brings out the sweetness in many recipes. I’ll add a pinch into the recipe. Thanks!
I’m going to try today and will let you know how it works thx for the recipe
Hi, I just made this hot chocolate, and this rivals the best chocolate I’ve had, which was in a chocolate factory in Peru. My husband couldn’t believe its Keto!
Great recipe! Thanks!
That’s so great to hear! Enjoy Shivani 🙂
Fantastic!!! I originally made another recipe that uses coconut milk and I couldn’t stand the coconut flavor. No matter how much cocoa powder I used I could still taste the coconut. This recipe mimics the real thing, but I did add some Stevia drops because I like my hot chocolate sweet!
Fun fact: I dropped some off at a friend’s house and they texted me later saying it’s too good… Is it really keto?!
It’s always great when another person thinks it’s not keto! It’s a sign of a good recipe 🙂
Delicious! I topped with a little whipped cream. Thanks for such a great recipe!!
Sorry I’m new to low carb but I am confused.. the can of cocoa powder says 3g of carb per tablespoon and if we add 3 table spoons that 9gs of carb? Still low carb but how did you get 2?
We count net carbs – which is total carbs minus any fiber and sugar alcohols. Hope that helps!
Best low carb hot choc recipe to date! Yum!
Delicious hot chocolate! The last time I made this I didn’t have almond milk, so I tried it with canned coconut milk, but I didn’t really like the taste. I put my leftovers in the fridge and of course they solidified…turns out I made delicious chocolate pudding. 🙂
Delicious! This is my new hot chocolate drink.
Just made this. It’s delicious. Followed your recipe and only had unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk (sorry not sorry..ha)….delish!!!!! Not sure how much of a flavor difference it made because I haven’t had this the original way in your recipe, but I’m sure it added another level of flavors.
The nutrabullet idea to blend everything is KEY! The froth really makes it special! Disclaimer….the heat builds up and you need to “release” it or the cover will blow off like a champagne bottle. Also don’t fill the nutribullet up too full, it needs room to expand. Ha.
It took me a couple sips to reset my taste buds and brain cells from what “traditional” hot cocoa tastes like to Enjoying the keto-healthier version! I don’t really prefer things overly sweet so this hits the spot. Just sweet enough.
Thank you for sharing! This will be a staple in my kitchen as the winter approaches!
We love getting comments like this! Our taste buds also had to get used to things being not so sweet. And so much flavor gets to shine through when everything isn’t pumped full of sugar, right?!
I followed the link you provided for almond milk and found it has 16g CHO per cup – so 24 g CHO for the recipe. At 2 servings, this would be 12 g per serving – hardly low carb. And yet your nutritional information says 2 net g of CHO per serving.
Can you explain?
The link was incorrectly leading to a sweetened almond milk. It’s fixed now, thank you for pointing that out!
All our macros are based on unsweetened almond milk.
