Liquid Benefits through Butter Coffee!
Butter coffee is an amazing way to start off your keto day. Not only does it energize you, but it also stimulates your metabolism, boosts focus and improves brain function. It also tastes amazingly rich, creamy and decadent- exactly what you need in the morning!
As an advocate of the ketogenic lifestyle, one of his most popular methods for a supercharged, productive and healthy day is starting each morning with a cup of butter coffee. This is simply coffee with butter and coconut oil (truly keto coffee ingredients). You probably have all 3 ingredients in your kitchen now! When stocking your pantry to make keto butter coffee, be sure to use high-quality ingredients like grass-fed butter and organic, unfiltered coconut oil to get the most health benefits possible.
Some people don’t like the bitter taste of coffee and end up settling for a cup loaded with artificial flavors and sugars to mask the taste. However, you do not need to pour sugar into coffee just to make it taste great. Butter coffee is a good alternative to the artificial cup of junk, with the added benefit of being incredibly healthy. It’s creamy and even somewhat sweet even without any added sweetener.

MCT oil1 attributes to much of the drink’s benefits. Coconuts, and their healthy saturated fat-filled meat, are very high in MCT’s (medium chain triglycerides) which are easily digested by the body and uniquely metabolized. They are taken directly to the liver to provide long-lasting energy (much better than energy derived from carbohydrates). MCT oil provides benefits such as improved blood sugar regulation2, improved metabolism3, improved appetite regulation4, and are used to treat many diseases. You can think of MCT oil as a concentrated form of coconut oil.
Enjoying a cup of butter coffee in the mornings or afternoon gives you a boost of fat and keeps you feeling full for a long time.
Each ingredient serves an important function in making good butter coffee. That includes the Nutribullet! The key to making this coffee is high-speed blending – stirring will not give you the same results. You need to disperse the oil evenly throughout the drink or you might end up with a pool of coconut oil and butter floating at the top!
Some optional add-ins include a splash of cream, cinnamon, cocoa powder or a sugar-free syrup (but we’re keeping it natural and simple!).

- Make a cup of coffee your favorite way. We like to use a Turkish Coffee Pot. We simply simmer ground coffee in water for about 5 minutes and then strain it into our cup. You can also use a Moka Pot, a French press, or a coffee machine!
- Pour your brewed coffee into your blender (like a Nutribullet) and butter and coconut oil. Blend for about 10 seconds. You'll see it instantly become light and creamy!
- Pour the butter coffee into a mug and enjoy! Add in any other ingredients you’d like in this step like cinnamon or whipped cream!

Is having butter coffee in the AM allowed on an 18/6 IF diet with eating window between 1PM and 8PM? Does it sabotage the effects of IF?
Butter Coffee is quite high in calories and fat so I wouldn’t suggest it during a fast!
when measuring the coconut oil does it matter if it’s liquid or solid
I usually measure it when it a liquid. If it’s too solid, try warming the jar up in some warm water before scooping.
Will bulletproof coffee sabotage an intermittent fasting keto diet if you drink it in the morning doing your fasting segment
Yes, it will break your fast. It’s high in calories and fat.
What is the difference between using cream or butter
It comes down to fat content and consistency. A lot of people prefer butter because it’s easier to find a good quality grass-fed butter than cream.
Here’s how I make my bulletproof coffee.
While the coffee is brewing I put the butter and coconut oil in a coffee cup and put in microwave for 15 seconds. This melts the ingredients and heats up the cup. Then I pour coffee into the cup, add whipping cream and blend with a battery powered milk frother for a few seconds. The result is creamy HOT COFFEE!! Rinse off the end of the milk frother and clean-up done! Milk frother’s can range anywhere from $5.99 and up. I have both the very cheap (my kids used for mixing hot chocolate and that gross green powder tea) to the aerolatte brand that can cost $40.00. They are no different and look and function identical. All that is required is 2 batteries. Anyway hope this is helpful.
Thanks for the tip! Milk frothers are great because they’re so compact. You can even take them on the road and always have frothy coffee 🙂
Hey there, I’m also allergic to coconut. I’ve looked at MCT oils and all the ones I’ve seen contain coconut. Is there a bran you can suggest that is coconut free? I live in a relatively small Canadian city (especially when compared with cities like Toronto), so I’m limited with what the stores have here to go by, and my brief check online only shows me MCT oils that contain coconut. I’ve read about making coffee this way for some time and I would love to try it, but I’ve never been able to figure out what to change for the coconut oil.
Hmm, I would then try a different oil all together. Something like flaxseed oil would be a great addition because it’s high in Omega-3 fatty acids and pretty mild in flavor. Try that 🙂
You can also use grass fed butter.
I just fixed this, I added one sweetener, not bad at all, creamy and rich. Made with a cup of coffee from my keurig.
Can I buy aTurkish pot at Bath and Beyound store?
Yeah, for sure! You can also find them on Amazon or other online stores.
Can i use instant coffee for the bullet proof mix
I think that should be fine.
I am allergic to coconut in all forms, please what other oil can I use?
You can try MCT oil for the same benefits. Coconut oil is high in MCT (medium chain triglycerides) which contribute to much of coconut oil’s benefits.
Hi,
I was just wondering how does this coffee “feel”? I only had coffee with coconut oil once, and it felt horrible and greasy on the tongue, but this looks nice and creamy. I’d like to give it a try!
We blend our coffee for a few seconds to emulsify the oil. This creates a creamy and smooth consistency. No oil pooling on the surface!
Will ghee work in this recipe?
The butter is meant to make the coffee creamier instead of using milk or cream. I think because ghee is more like oil than butter, it might not do the job so well. It should taste fine! You can always add some cinnamon or vanilla extract if it tastes a bit weird. Give it a try and let us know!
will it mix creamy with cold brew coffee ( for an iced coffee)- or does the coffee need to be warm to mix with the butter and coconut oil?
Hi Tara,
It should be a bit warm to melt the butter and coconut oil but doesn’t have to be too warm since you’re blending it.
Is it okay to put something hot in a plastic blender? Doesn’t seem like it would be good for the blender and it might leach some plastic into your drink, as well. Thoughts?
These blenders are made to handle hot liquids but if it’s a concern for you, I’d suggest contacting the brand of blender you have and asking them what temperature is the limit for their product.
I asked nutribullet and they said not to put hot liquid in my bullet, I’m not keen on putting it in the microwave, to heat cold coffee would a hand mixer work just as well?
A hand mixer would work! Though I think it’d be little messy so be careful.
I use an immersion blender! Works great!
We keep our immersion blender around for this and homemade mayo!
What is grass fed?
Hi Suelem,
It means the cow which made the milk was fed grass instead of grain.
Don’t forget to add vanilla extract!
And cinnamon!
How much vanilla
Anyone know if you can make bulletproof coffee dairy free and it still benefit you?
Hey Chivon, we’ve been making bulletproof coffee for a while now and if you’d like it dairy free, try using coconut oil and coconut milk. You still get the benefits of coconut oil and the added creaminess you get from butter thanks to the coconut milk!
