Liquid Benefits through Butter Coffee!
Butter coffee is an amazing way to start off your keto day. Not only does it energize you, but it also stimulates your metabolism, boosts focus and improves brain function. It also tastes amazingly rich, creamy and decadent- exactly what you need in the morning!
As an advocate of the ketogenic lifestyle, one of his most popular methods for a supercharged, productive and healthy day is starting each morning with a cup of butter coffee. This is simply coffee with butter and coconut oil (truly keto coffee ingredients). You probably have all 3 ingredients in your kitchen now! When stocking your pantry to make keto butter coffee, be sure to use high-quality ingredients like grass-fed butter and organic, unfiltered coconut oil to get the most health benefits possible.
Some people don’t like the bitter taste of coffee and end up settling for a cup loaded with artificial flavors and sugars to mask the taste. However, you do not need to pour sugar into coffee just to make it taste great. Butter coffee is a good alternative to the artificial cup of junk, with the added benefit of being incredibly healthy. It’s creamy and even somewhat sweet even without any added sweetener.

MCT oil1 attributes to much of the drink’s benefits. Coconuts, and their healthy saturated fat-filled meat, are very high in MCT’s (medium chain triglycerides) which are easily digested by the body and uniquely metabolized. They are taken directly to the liver to provide long-lasting energy (much better than energy derived from carbohydrates). MCT oil provides benefits such as improved blood sugar regulation2, improved metabolism3, improved appetite regulation4, and are used to treat many diseases. You can think of MCT oil as a concentrated form of coconut oil.
Enjoying a cup of butter coffee in the mornings or afternoon gives you a boost of fat and keeps you feeling full for a long time.
Each ingredient serves an important function in making good butter coffee. That includes the Nutribullet! The key to making this coffee is high-speed blending – stirring will not give you the same results. You need to disperse the oil evenly throughout the drink or you might end up with a pool of coconut oil and butter floating at the top!
Some optional add-ins include a splash of cream, cinnamon, cocoa powder or a sugar-free syrup (but we’re keeping it natural and simple!).

- Make a cup of coffee your favorite way. We like to use a Turkish Coffee Pot. We simply simmer ground coffee in water for about 5 minutes and then strain it into our cup. You can also use a Moka Pot, a French press, or a coffee machine!
- Pour your brewed coffee into your blender (like a Nutribullet) and butter and coconut oil. Blend for about 10 seconds. You'll see it instantly become light and creamy!
- Pour the butter coffee into a mug and enjoy! Add in any other ingredients you’d like in this step like cinnamon or whipped cream!

I blended and still got a layer of oil and fat at the top. Any advice?
Keep blending until it’s completely emulsified, it may take a few seconds. What type of blender are you using?
Tried this this morning for the 1st time and was pleasantly surprised. Trying it again tomorrow but will add the cinnamon. I did not miss the sugar I usually use. Any suggestions for coffee shop alternatives?
Our favorite is the Cold Brew at Starbucks with a splash of heavy cream. We have a whole post about ordering at coffee shops, feel free to get some inspiration from there!
Can you use an immersion blender?
Definitely!
Tried it and loved it I never imagine bitter would taste good in coffe, it was dwlicious
I usually like my coffee black with a little splenda, this will be hard for me, it’s a texture thing with me.
Can I use a Keruig for the coffee?
Sure!
Awesome coffee, have done it in my magic bullet and drink it on my way to work, do not get hungry for a while, thank you
I’ve started having lower leg cramps into my third week of keto eating…what am I missing?
According to many people, magnesium! That should solve your issue. Take a supplement or incorporate more foods containing magnesium into your diet.
Adapted your recipe slightly and used buttered flavoured coconut oil with lactose free butter, 1tbsp of whipping cream and a pinch of salt. Have to say it’s one of the better tasting recipes. Thanks for the base to start.
I usually have more than one cup of coffee in the morning – would you just make more coffee with the tbsp of butter and oil in it – or would you actually make this twice? First day making it – delicious! Just haven’t wrapped my head around all this fat just yet. 🙂
I’d just have one and see how you feel. It’s quite heavy in calories so I’m not sure if I could do two in a row 🙂
I use MCT oil for my coffee
OMG why is this grossness so tasty?????
It’s so nasty but blend it all up and it is amazing! So glad I tried it. I’ve made this and the Apple Tart and the Cream-cheese Pancakes! Thank you so much for all of this. Weight loss does not have to be with a lack of taste.
I used my ninja blender and added a tablespoon of heavy whipping cream and it’s absolutely delicious!!
What coffee ground setting should I use for a French press?
Coarse is best for the French press to reduce dregs.
can you use instant coffee?
Technically, yes. Real coffee tastes better though! 😀
when i tried to use my nutra bullet for my butter coffee ☕️, it exploded all over the place ? …. i guess cause the coffee was so hot. i wouldn’t recommend those types of blenders for hot liquids, this has happened to me before. i would use a regular blender or one that you can actually stick down into your cup
With a Nutribullet, you have to be careful to allow some of the pressurized steam to escape. Open the canister just slightly to let the steam out, then open all the way safely 🙂
Can I just put the oils in a cup of coffee? Can it give the same effect?
You really want to blend the oils in, otherwise, you’ll end up with a pool of oil floating on top. Not too appetizing!
