Liquid Benefits through Butter Coffee!
Butter coffee is an amazing way to start off your keto day. Not only does it energize you, but it also stimulates your metabolism, boosts focus and improves brain function. It also tastes amazingly rich, creamy and decadent- exactly what you need in the morning!
As an advocate of the ketogenic lifestyle, one of his most popular methods for a supercharged, productive and healthy day is starting each morning with a cup of butter coffee. This is simply coffee with butter and coconut oil (truly keto coffee ingredients). You probably have all 3 ingredients in your kitchen now! When stocking your pantry to make keto butter coffee, be sure to use high-quality ingredients like grass-fed butter and organic, unfiltered coconut oil to get the most health benefits possible.
Some people don’t like the bitter taste of coffee and end up settling for a cup loaded with artificial flavors and sugars to mask the taste. However, you do not need to pour sugar into coffee just to make it taste great. Butter coffee is a good alternative to the artificial cup of junk, with the added benefit of being incredibly healthy. It’s creamy and even somewhat sweet even without any added sweetener.

MCT oil1 attributes to much of the drink’s benefits. Coconuts, and their healthy saturated fat-filled meat, are very high in MCT’s (medium chain triglycerides) which are easily digested by the body and uniquely metabolized. They are taken directly to the liver to provide long-lasting energy (much better than energy derived from carbohydrates). MCT oil provides benefits such as improved blood sugar regulation2, improved metabolism3, improved appetite regulation4, and are used to treat many diseases. You can think of MCT oil as a concentrated form of coconut oil.
Enjoying a cup of butter coffee in the mornings or afternoon gives you a boost of fat and keeps you feeling full for a long time.
Each ingredient serves an important function in making good butter coffee. That includes the Nutribullet! The key to making this coffee is high-speed blending – stirring will not give you the same results. You need to disperse the oil evenly throughout the drink or you might end up with a pool of coconut oil and butter floating at the top!
Some optional add-ins include a splash of cream, cinnamon, cocoa powder or a sugar-free syrup (but we’re keeping it natural and simple!).

- Make a cup of coffee your favorite way. We like to use a Turkish Coffee Pot. We simply simmer ground coffee in water for about 5 minutes and then strain it into our cup. You can also use a Moka Pot, a French press, or a coffee machine!
- Pour your brewed coffee into your blender (like a Nutribullet) and butter and coconut oil. Blend for about 10 seconds. You'll see it instantly become light and creamy!
- Pour the butter coffee into a mug and enjoy! Add in any other ingredients you’d like in this step like cinnamon or whipped cream!

What if I don’t like coffee? Is there a tea version? Just add butter and coconut oil or MCT oil?
Yep, people definitely enjoy butter tea too!
Can you add your exogenous ketones to it?
If you’d like!
Is liquid unflavoured coconut oil ok to use? Can you just stir it and the butter into the coffee or is it different if you blend it?
You should really blend it, otherwise, it’ll remain in a puddle at the top of your coffee! Blending will emulsify the oil into coffee, creating the nice foamy texture 🙂
Is “bulletproof” coffee just a mixture of butter & MCT oil? New to all of this… I don’t normally use sugar in my coffee..do I need to for this?
That’s essentially it! You don’t need to drink this, it’s not a requirement. It’s just a great way to add more fat to your breakfasts or throughout the day.
I want to try this. Will salted butter work too or does it have to be unsalted?
It’s better to use unsalted, but I’ve tried it with salted and could barely tell the difference.
Ok, thanks Vicky! I’m gl ing to try it with salted butter I guess. Would I still get the same effect if I left out the butter and just used coconut oil and used HWC?
That’s would be fine too. Butter and cream are essentially the same things but with different fat and liquid content.
Just starting out with (variation of) keto.
I have to say not having any sugar or just some half and half in my morning coffee is hard! I love my coffee a bit sweet and creamy but find heavy cream to creamy…
Today I stirred some butter in my coffee with a splash of heavy cream, and it was better.
Tomorrow I’m trying the bulletproof coffee.
Hope I end up liking it because not enjoying my cofee is a diet deal breaker 🙂
OMGad! Today is the first time I’ve tried bulletproof coffee and it was absolutely delicious.
Hi ! I use only organic coffee , unsalted organic butter and unrefined virgin coconut oil ( in glass only !) is this ok? And I was wondering can I make a pot of coffee and keep in the refrigerator and use only what I need ? Do you do this on a empty stomach ? Thank you?
I wouldn’t make coffee ahead of time unless you’re making Cold Brew Coffee. It can go stale on you! We drink coffee on an empty stomach but some people find they have stomach pains so you’ve got to test it for yourself. Hope that helped!
Can you do this without the butter?
Absolutely!
can you really put hot liquids in a NutriBullet? I thought you couldn’t so I have been using my immersion blender to make the coffee. But I have a nutribullet too!
An immersion blender works too! We use the Nutribullet with caution and open the lid slowly because pressure can build inside the cup.
I love this coffee♥️ It keeps me full all morning! I have added sugar free caramel coffee syrup and some cinnamon at times. Love the foam too!
can you use salted butter? we use salted kerrygold because that’s what Costco has (they don’t carry the unsalted version anymore) and therefore we don’t usually have unsalted in the house.
I believe I’ve tried this with salted and it was totally fine 🙂 a little sodium on keto is a good thing, anyway!
I like several cups of coffee so is more than one Bulletproof OK?
If your macros allow it, go for it!
can you add sugar free syrup with splenda
If it helps you stick to your keto diet in the beginning, then yes. Ideally, you’d stay away from artificial sweeteners. Try stevia or erythritol – both are better and more natural options.
Can I also include heavy cream and cinnamon?
Sure! Give it a try
I am assuming you use unsalted butter. just want to make sure before I try it out. New to all this
also do I have to look for anything when buying coffee. we usually drink tim Horton made at home. buy the grounds in a can. can I use that or should I be looking for something else
Yes, it’s unsalted butter. You can use any coffee you prefer. We use Trader Joe’s organic breakfast blend and we love it 🙂
Is the blended coffee still hot?
Of course!
