Low Carb Dinner, Done Right!
I’ve fallen in love with making videos. If a picture says a thousand words, then a video screams them! It’s lots of fun recording the process behind making a dish and it’s really helpful to those looking for direction. If you have any questions about how to make a recipe, you can simply watch the whole video! It’s one thing to include step-by-step photos but those tend to take the backseat to the final images of the dish in its full glory.
The process behind the finished product is just as, if not more, important. Making a great food video really is an art. Shooting videos reminds us that the preparation can be beautiful too and hopefully that beauty shines through in all of our video guides.
So, for our next video, we decided to make a cult classic, Crack Slaw! This is a totally addictive slaw type mix that everyone is going crazy over. There are lots of versions of it circulating around the internet and they all have an Asian spin to them and ours does as well. With just a bag of coleslaw mix, some ground beef and a few perfectly blended seasonings, you will be enjoying a complete meal in a bowl in no time!

Of course, one of the best things about our easy crack slaw is that the entire dish is very low carb. This is super important to anyone who is following a keto diet and wants to try out the crack slaw internet sensation. Our version of the slaw turned out at about 4 net carbs per serving. Not too shabby!
Our nutritional facts were based on 88/12% ground beef, so if your beef is slightly different, your macros may be a little different as well. The same is true with some of the other ingredients like the soy sauce and the bagged coleslaw mix. If you opt to use coconut aminos in place of soy sauce (a very common substitute especially for those looking to cut back on sodium consumption), the macros may increase slightly. The type of bagged slaw you use may also alter your nutritional info a little bit. However, regardless of fat content of the meat or the amount f sodium in your soy sauce, the net carbs should stay the same!
Once you check out our video, we know you are going to want to start cooking this delicious full meal in a bowl. It is easy, flavorful and a total dinner win. It’s hard to go wrong with crack slaw! It really does live up to its name and is quite addictive…
Love Asian cuisine? Give these a try!
Here’s how we make it!
Servings: servings |
- 2 cloves garlic
- 2 tbsp sesame seed oil
- 1 lb ground beef (we used 88% lean)
- 10 oz. cole slaw salad mix
- 1 tbsp sriracha
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp vinegar
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp pink Himalayan sea salt
- 1 tsp sesame seeds
- 1 stalk green onion
- Start by heating your sesame seed oil in a large wok and crushing 2 garlic cloves into it. Cook until fragrant.
- Add in a pound of ground beef and break up with a wooden spoon.
- Once your ground beef is browned, about 5-10 minutes, add in your cole slaw salad mix and toss to combine.
- Add in sriracha, soy sauce and vinegar and toss. Let this cook for about 5 minutes for the cole slaw mix to wilt.
- Season with salt, pepper and sesame seeds. Serve with a sprinkle of green onion and enjoy!

I don’t have a wok…can I use a regular frying pan?
Absolutely!
i made this over the weekend with a few tweaks and posted about it on my blog! Would love for you to check it out and I gave you a shout out too! I hope that is ok 🙂
Of course 🙂
making this tomorrow and can’t wait to try it!
Hello! Thank you for your website!! Can’t wait to make your “Crack Slaw”. I had a question though, my husband and I are beginning a Keto diet and was wondering, have you ever used a vegetable Spiralizer? If so, is there one that you’d recommend?
Yes! We’ve tried two – one handheld and one that suctions to your countertop. The handheld one was smaller and quicker to use/wash, but the countertop one was much easier to use 🙂
Handheld: http://amzn.to/2kJezGI
Countertop: http://amzn.to/2lVfXen
We also wrote a book with 100 spiralizer recipes! You can check it out here: http://amzn.to/2lVbF6x
Hope that helps!
What do you serve with it?
Usually, it’s eaten all by itself, but you can serve it in low carb wraps or with some cauliflower mashed potatoes on the side!
Hi Vicky, I love your videos! Thank you! WOuld you mind sharing what video editing app you use? Thank you!!
Hi Renee, we use Adobe Premiere Pro 🙂
Made this the other night. AMAZING!!! Had some leftovers and added some fresh grated ginger – so good! This will be a staple in our home. (Very easy, too.) Next time I’ll use 1/2 ground beef, 1/2 ground pork. Try it as is, you’ll love it.
Sounds great! Pork and beef seems like the way to go 🙂
This dish is absolutely delicious! And that’s from a person who cooks professionally! I’m new to keto and I’ve been looking to spice up my standard recipes. This one makes the list! Yummy!
Thanks so much Avis! Glad you like it as much as we do!
Made this the other night and really enjoyed it! The leftovers the next day were even better. I made a couple adjustments based on my personal cravings that day…used ground pork instead of beef….grated a couple of teaspoons of fresh ginger into the wok during Step 1…and thawed a cup of frozen stir fry veggies and tossed them in with the coleslaw during Step 3. Mine didn’t turn out dry at all as some others mentioned. I was really happy with the simplicity of the recipe. I didn’t have to chop anything and it came together in less than 20 minutes. Definitely a keeper.
That’s great to hear Rachel! Glad you made this recipe your own 🙂
Do you drain the grease?
We usually don’t! Grease is fat and natural fat is the best kind of fat to eat.
Are you supposed to serve this on or in something? My husband insists it’s meant to be a filling for egg rolls. Help!!
We always eat it as is without anything else! It has veggies and meat so it can be a full meal. You can use it for stuffing and filling of course. That’s up to you!
Tried Crack Slaw this evening. Very good but a bit dry. I think I will use a little more cabbage slaw next time and a bit of beef broth.
Are you using 88% lean ground beef? Many leaner beefs will dry out since they don’t contain as much fat as 85% or 88% lean. Feel free to add a bit more liquid ingredients if yours seems a bit dry. Beef broth should work too!
Do you use the sauce that comes with the coleslaw or just the cabbage?
Just the cabbage, we buy the package without any sauce. It just contains white cabbage, red cabbage and carrot.
Do you think this would work with chicken?
Sure, ground chicken would be good, you might need to add a bit more fat though, chicken is much less fatty than ground beef.
My nutrition info didn’t even come close to what you posted, the only thing I didn’t use was green onions…. why is it soooooo different?
I used 88/12 beef too????
What macros did you come out to?
What kind of vinegar do you use?
We used regular white vinegar.
This is absolutely delicious!! But, before I eat the whole thing, how much is considered 1 serving of Crack Slaw?
We divided the recipe into 4 servings and calculated the macros that way. Hope that helps!
Thanks. However, is a serving considered 1 cup? 1/2 cup? Or… Something else? I’m just trying to keep myfitnesspal accurate.
Each serving was about 1 cup.
