Low Carb Dinner, Done Right!
I’ve fallen in love with making videos. If a picture says a thousand words, then a video screams them! It’s lots of fun recording the process behind making a dish and it’s really helpful to those looking for direction. If you have any questions about how to make a recipe, you can simply watch the whole video! It’s one thing to include step-by-step photos but those tend to take the backseat to the final images of the dish in its full glory.
The process behind the finished product is just as, if not more, important. Making a great food video really is an art. Shooting videos reminds us that the preparation can be beautiful too and hopefully that beauty shines through in all of our video guides.
So, for our next video, we decided to make a cult classic, Crack Slaw! This is a totally addictive slaw type mix that everyone is going crazy over. There are lots of versions of it circulating around the internet and they all have an Asian spin to them and ours does as well. With just a bag of coleslaw mix, some ground beef and a few perfectly blended seasonings, you will be enjoying a complete meal in a bowl in no time!

Of course, one of the best things about our easy crack slaw is that the entire dish is very low carb. This is super important to anyone who is following a keto diet and wants to try out the crack slaw internet sensation. Our version of the slaw turned out at about 4 net carbs per serving. Not too shabby!
Our nutritional facts were based on 88/12% ground beef, so if your beef is slightly different, your macros may be a little different as well. The same is true with some of the other ingredients like the soy sauce and the bagged coleslaw mix. If you opt to use coconut aminos in place of soy sauce (a very common substitute especially for those looking to cut back on sodium consumption), the macros may increase slightly. The type of bagged slaw you use may also alter your nutritional info a little bit. However, regardless of fat content of the meat or the amount f sodium in your soy sauce, the net carbs should stay the same!
Once you check out our video, we know you are going to want to start cooking this delicious full meal in a bowl. It is easy, flavorful and a total dinner win. It’s hard to go wrong with crack slaw! It really does live up to its name and is quite addictive…
Love Asian cuisine? Give these a try!
Here’s how we make it!
Servings: servings |
- 2 cloves garlic
- 2 tbsp sesame seed oil
- 1 lb ground beef (we used 88% lean)
- 10 oz. cole slaw salad mix
- 1 tbsp sriracha
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp vinegar
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp pink Himalayan sea salt
- 1 tsp sesame seeds
- 1 stalk green onion
- Start by heating your sesame seed oil in a large wok and crushing 2 garlic cloves into it. Cook until fragrant.
- Add in a pound of ground beef and break up with a wooden spoon.
- Once your ground beef is browned, about 5-10 minutes, add in your cole slaw salad mix and toss to combine.
- Add in sriracha, soy sauce and vinegar and toss. Let this cook for about 5 minutes for the cole slaw mix to wilt.
- Season with salt, pepper and sesame seeds. Serve with a sprinkle of green onion and enjoy!

I tried this tonight with a dash of red pepper flakes and a bit of Frank’s Redhot instead of sriracha. I also added a tiny dollop of sour cream on my plate and it was delicious! Thank you!
We absolutely LOVED this recipe. .thank you for sharing it ♡
Hi. This is a hit with my family- Thank you!
We mix it up with either ground chicken, ground turkey or ground beef. I know you said ser ing size is 1/4th the recipe. However, can you tell me what that comes out to in weight?
Sorry, we didn’t/don’t weight our servings since they can differ so heavily from water evaporating and different ingredients. We divide things based on the finished volume of the recipe. Maybe someone else in the comments can help!
It needed something sweet so I added pineapple! Much better!
Hi, should I drain the fat from ground beef or use it to season the cabbage. I know lchf diets use more fat but I just wanted to double check before I made this tonight. Thanks!
Feel free to keep the fat from the beef! It’ll make the recipe much yummier 🙂 If you find that it is too much fat, you may drain some of it as to not drown the cabbage, but we didn’t have to drain it when we made it. Hope that helps!
We love this so much and I was thinking of serving it to guests but I can’t think of something good to pair with it? Any thoughts?
A fresh salad or low-carb wraps would be nice! You can also choose any type of cooked veggie or cauliflower mash as a side too.
How do u know how much to eat ?
You can eat as much as your daily calories/macros allow! We made this recipe to feed 4 people – so if you eat 1/4th of the recipe, that’s 1 serving. Refer to the recipe to see the nutrition per serving.
Hi this recipe looks great. Could you tell me the ingredients in your coleslaw mix please? Thank you Janet
We usually use the Dole brand mix, which os just green cabbage and carrot. Though we’ve also seen purple cabbage included, which should work well too!
Oh my goodness. I just tried this and it was amazing! I was going to switch out a few things as they weren’t things I would usually use, glad I didn’t. I did add won ton pieces and it was nice.
Sounds great! Glad you enjoyed the recipe as is 🙂
Love this recipe! Make it all the time for my husband and I. It fits into our low carb healthy meal choices
Thank you!
Maureen
Made this tonight in less than 10 mins. So easy and so tasty, delicious and warming on a cold Australian night. Thank you so much for this ‘go-to’ recipe. The only thing I wondered about was the sugar in the Sriracha Sauce?
Sugar is generally a no-no on a ketogenic diet. It’s up to you how strict you’d like to be though. Sriracha has 1 gram of sugar per teaspoon and we use it sparingly 🙂
I tried it! I used just plain cabbage instead of coleslaw mix, but weighed it out. I thought it was better with some onion in the mix and a bit of fish sauce to enhance the flavors.
Sounds great! Thanks for the suggestions 🙂
I just made this and it was fantastic! I doubled the recipe for extra leftovers and used plain angel hair slaw mix without the carrots. I will definitely be making again. Thanks!
We’re glad you enjoyed! We have Crack Slaw at least once a week.
What can I substitute for the sriracha??
Any kind of hot sauce you’d like! Or you can omit it entirely 🙂
Hi Vicky, The crackslaw looks yummy and I’d love to give it a go. I’m the recipe you say add 10oz coleslaw salad. Can you tell me what’s in the coleslaw mix? In Ireland, where I live, coleslaw is made with chopped white cabbage, carrot and onion, is it the same or do you add other veg?
I’m also going to try your kimchi, I’ve been looking for a recipe for a while and you make it sound so easy.
Here in New York, we buy a cole slaw mix which is mainly white cabbage and carrot, sometimes red cabbage too. The kimchi is definitely easier than it sounds! It’s just a little process so be prepared to get your hands dirty 🙂
I am new to the keto diet. My husband has a ct scan showing he may have cancer. So I am trying this diet to starve cancer cells and over all help our health.
So this dinner s the first thing I have made from your websight. He particularly likes asian food so this went over well. I did add fresh ginger and used chopped white onion instead of green onion.
I like that this was short on prep time and easy to fix. I will make it again!
Glad to hear he enjoyed it! You’re doing the right thing. It’s extremely important to keep carbs (glucose) out of cancer’s reach as that’s how it grows and perpetuates itself.
Himalayan Pink sea salt? Can any other salt be used as a substitute?
Use any salt you like, to taste!
